The Smithsonian American Art Museum presented Jorge Pardo with the first annual Lucelia Artist Award, recognizing leading contemporary American artists under the age of 50. The Cuban-born sculptor, who resides and practices in Los Angeles, explores issues of architecture and interior space in his large-scale installations. "Pardo's work blurs the distinction between art, architecture, and design," says Lynda Roscoe Hartigan, chief curator at the museum. "By using everyday objects in his installations, Pardo encourages shifting perceptions toward looking for beauty outside of traditional art spaces."
