The city of Brotherly Love is readying its trademark warm embrace for DesignPhiladelphia, a week-long celebration of all things design.
More than 90 events are on tap for the citywide event, to be held October 7 to October 13, which will highlight architecture, interior design, fashion, product design, textiles and graphic design. More than 450 designers will be represented throughout the city's participating boutiques, galleries, design studios, museums and universities, not to mention its warehouses, parks and streets.
This steam-bent wood chaise lounge on display at Philadelphia's Wexler Gallery is one example of sustainable design for living.
This year's edition includes Dialogues on Design, a series of conversations with pros like product designer Karim Rashid and architect James Timberlake, as well as SoReFa, described as an "eco-couture runway show." Urban park design is the focus of Philly Heart Design, a collaborative "intervention" held in an empty city lot, while the Philly Works exhibition marketplace will showcase locally designed and produced items.
More than 15 architecture, product design and graphic design firms, including Wallace Roberts & Todd and Interface Studio, will open their doors to the public as part of DesignPhiladelphia's Open Studios series. And if visual feasts aren't enough, Dining by Design will tempt attendees with specialized menus at local restaurants during the event.

Last year, approximately 235,000 people attended DesignPhiladelphia events, a number organizers hope to increase this year. "Through showcasing the extent of designers and retailers, professional offices, museums, and galleries in this area, DesignPhiladelphia aids in the city's retention and attraction of young designers and creative professionals," says DesignPhiladelphia founder and executive director Hilary Jay. "[It] is instrumental in raising the national reputation of Philadelphia as a city of change and innovation."
