Morphosis Architects and Schlaich Bergermann und Partner are the winners of lighting manufacturer Zumtobel Group's first annual Zumtobel Group Award for Sustainability and Humanity in the Built Environment. Carrying a 140,000 euro prize split between two categories, the contest was conceived as a nod to outstanding sustainable and humanitarian solutions in contemporary architecture and engineering.
Los Angeles-based Morphosis is honored for the San Francisco Federal Building in the Built Environment category and Schlaich Bergermann, based in Stuttgart, Germany, for the Solar Updraft Tower in the Research and Initiative category. Forty projects were considered for the awards.
An international jury of industry professionals included engineers, a philosopher, the executive director of UN Habitat, and the CEO of the Zumtobel Group.
Morphosis is praised for creating a naturally-ventilated high-rise which combines advanced sustainable technology with intelligent design strategies and overall aesthetic. “Through its leadership in sustainable thinking, this building sends out a strong signal and message in the urban context, not only in the US, but all over the world," the jury noted.
Schlaich Bergermann's alternative power plant is the result of a long development process. It is now scheduled to be used throughout Australia.
