Helsinki Design Week

Although it's the most sparsely populated country in the European Union, Finland should prepare for a surge of new settlers when the annual Helsinki Design Week convenes in the Finnish capitol.

Centered around Helsinki's Cable Factory venue, the September 4-13 festival is dubbed "Do Touch!," a reference to the series of workshops, exhibitions, fashion shows, seminars and studio tours that are meant to encourage collaboration between the Scandinavian country's creative professionals and visitors.

In a cross-cultural turn, the main exhibition at this year's festival is the Dutch Pavilion at the Cable Factory, a treat for those searching for the best of contemporary design from Holland.

But the land of Marimekko, Eero Saarinen and Alvar Aalto certainly isn't selling itself short, as the New Draw exhibition will introduce nine emerging Finnish architecture offices through the launch of a book that contains articles on Helsinki's most stunning architectural sights.

The Cable Factory will be doing triple duty as it simultaneously hosts Design Market on September 5 and 6, where dozens of vendors will sell products ranging from fashion to furniture. Meanwhile, Helsinki's design district will feature special shows, product launches and designer appearances throughout the week at 170 locations spread over 25 blocks.
