In the design industry, January is an action-packed month, at least when it comes to awards programs. Case in point, the Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture recently announced the winners of the Good Design Awards, and now we have the AIA Institute Honor Awards, presented by the American Institute of Architects.
This year, 25 international recipients (from over 700 submissions) received a nod for excellence in architecture, interior architecture, and urban design: Of these, nine projects were selected for the architecture category; 10 projects for the interior architecture category; and six projects for the regional and urban design category.
Two firms earn the exclusive honor of having more than one project on the list: full-service design and architecture firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) and architecture firm VJAA. SOM won in both the architecture category (for the Cathedral of Christ the Light in Oakland, California) and the Regional and Urban Design category (for Foshan Donghuali Master Plan in Guangdong, China; the redevelopment of Treasure Island in San Francisco; and the Southworks Lakeside Chicago Development, Chicago, completed jointly with Sasaki Associates). VJAA took awards for both the Charles Hostler Student Center in Beirut, Lebanon and the Lavin-Bernick Center for University Life in New Orleans
The winners will be feted at the AIA 2009 National Convention and Design Exposition in San Francisco.
