Scientific Certification Systems (SCS), an independent certifier of environmental and food safety claims, has extended the reach of its indoor air quality certification program to include both Indoor Advantage and Indoor Advantage Gold. These two groups encompass interior building products--from wall coverings, ceiling tiles, and furniture, to insulation.
Indoor Advantage meets the LEED criteria for its EQ4.5, EQ4.1, and EQ4.2 credits, and Advantage Gold conforms to the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED criteria, as well as standards for California 01350 and the Collaborative for High Performance Schools.
The Indoor Advantage Gold program is based on Chronic Reference Exposure Levels (CREL) set by the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment, rather than Total VOCs and Threshold Limit Values. A CREL is an airborne concentration level that poses no significant health risk to individuals indefinitely exposed--insuring a healthy environment.
Certification is based on data collected through small chamber testing. Manufactures can then examine a product's individual components and involve the supply chain in improving product performance. All Indoor Advantage processes, test requirements, and standards are publicly available to ensure transparency, and SCS maintains relationships with three approved testing laboratories.
“For manufacturers,” says Kirsten Ritchie, director of environmental claims at SCS, “the Indoor Advantage certifications offer a continuous path of improvement in product environmental sustainability.”
