Spanish colonial art finally has a permanent home in the U.S. Opening in Santa Fe, New Mexico, on July 21, the Museum of Spanish Colonial Art is this country's first institution devoted to the genre, which consists of devotional and decorative pieces as well as utilitarian artifacts representing five centuries and four continents. The 12,000-square-foot building, a former residence renovated and expanded by the Santa Fe firm Architectural Alliance, houses 3,000 objects. The inaugural exhibition, "Conexiones: Connections in Spanish Colonial Art," features furniture, textiles, paintings of saints, and metalwork drawn from the museum's own collection. 505-982-2226; www.spanishcolonial.org.
