Break-Out Success

In "Breakable Art: Contemporary Glass and Ceramics from Norway," New York's Scandinavia House presents 51 works by superior Norwegian glass blowers and ceramicists. The collection represents the highly decorative, but also functional works such as vessels and plates. The scope explores the region's innovation as well as deftness with traditional forms. June 7–August 26.

The Cradle of Inspiration

"Primitive & Modern," at New York's Art Deco gallery Maison Gerard, looks at how African artifacts from the 16th to 18th centuries influenced 20th-century French Deco furniture and crafts. Pieces from the 1930's by Emile-Jacques Ruhlmann and Jean-Michel Frank combine with ancient tribal objects for a total of 100 works. Through June 4.

Gin and Honors

Russian designers Victoria Trenina and Alexey Sabirullov have won the 2005 Bombay Sapphire Designer Glass competition. Their winning design of the Flowing Down Drops martini glass debuted at Milan's Salone Internazionale del Mobile. It features ripples of cut glass on its surface, simulating droplets of liquid. The designers received an honorarium of $15,000.

The Next Generation

Recognizing that many competitions reward only seasoned architects, the School of Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee has formed the Marcus Corporation Foundation Prize for young architects. An international panel will nominate candidates for the biennial award. This year's winner of the $100,000 cash prize will be named in June.
