Architects Selected for Major Arizona State University Project

The building will include high technology research, laboratory, and office space.

A major construction project, priced at $140 million, is underway at the Tempe campus of Arizona State University (ASU). The 250,000-square-foot Interdisciplinary Science and Technology Building IV will serve as a science and technology center and will be designed by HDR Architecture and Steven Ehrlich Architects, the university recently announced. The design team expects to garner a minimum of a LEED Silver certification from the U.S. Green Building Council for its green design.

Adding high technology research, laboratory, and office space, the building will be used for researchers, faculty, and staff of the School of Earth and Science Exploration (SESE), in addition to education areas including synthetic chemistry, environmental engineering, and energy research initiatives. The design team must be particularly conscious of the demands of high-tech equipment, which is often sensitive to vibration and EMI impacts.

"As is evidenced by our current work on the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and KAET-8 for the City of Phoenix and Arizona State University, the HDR/SEA team is truly collaborative and transdisciplinary," says Michael Jackson, managing principal in the HDR Phoenix office.

The project is scheduled for completion in early 2010.
