The annual ACT Scholarship Quilt Auction brings out the cozy side of contract

Linas Alsenas -- Interior Design, 5/1/2002 12:00:00 AM

At the sixth annual ACT Scholarship Quilt Auction, members of the Association for Contract Textiles really went all out, offering more than 40 lots for both live and silent bidding at Sotheby's, New York. The spreads weren't your ordinary homespun, batting-happy, single-stitch handicraft items. Created using sturdy contract fabrics, pieces ranged from an Amish-inspired reversible column quilt by Juliarose Loffredo for Arc-Com Fabrics to a vessel of woven selvages and flawed remnants by Mary Jo Miller of HBF Textiles. The addition of decidedly unquiltlike objects—also including contract-fabric handbags, chairs, and screens—didn't seem to bother the 750 champagne-sipping attendees. "It's a big party. Everyone just has a great time," says Pollack's Ellen Schwartz, chairperson of the event. This year's auction, which raised over $35,000, benefited a scholarship endowment for textile-design students at Philadelphia University.
