Carpet Manufacturer Taps 100 Percent Green Energy

Beaulieu Commercial will save over 12 million pounds of emissions, thanks to Renewable Energy Credits.

Mairi Beautyman -- Interior Design, 2/28/2008 12:00:00 AM

Carpet manufacturer Beaulieu Commercial has made a landmark sustainability commitment. The company is the first commercial carpet manufacturer to source 100 percent renewable energy.

"People don’t always realize that in the U.S., the largest source of carbon-heavy greenhouse gasses comes, not from automobiles, but from coal-fired electric power plants,” explains James Lesslie, president of Beaulieu Commercial.

The initiative, says Lesslie, is equivalent to taking 1,200 cars off the road. Cleaner, sustainable energy will power part of Beaulieu Commercial's manufacturing operations and the remaining energy use will be offset via Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) purchased from wind power companies. Although not officially mandated by the Environmental Protection Agency, the wind power companies are all third-party certified by the non-profit Center for Resource Solutions’ Green-E program. Effective immediately, Beaulieu Commercial can stamp the Green-E label on all of its products and corporate communications.

A member of the EPA's Green Power Partners’ Leadership Club, Beaulieu Commercial is also the first carpet manufacturer to include post-consumer recycled content in 100 percent of its products.

"Beaulieu Commercial’s 2008 green power purchase represents over 12 million pounds of emissions that won’t be going into the atmosphere," Lesslie adds.
