USGBC Celebrates Membership Milestone

The green building industry is now a $12 billion market.

Mairi Beautyman -- Interior Design, 7/11/2007 12:00:00 AM

Last week, the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) hit 10,000 member companies. The non-profit organization, which is made up of corporations, builders, universities, government agencies, and other non-profit organizations, proclaimed the achievement a turning point in the building design and construction market.

Founded in 1993, the USGBC now has a 90-person professional staff, a broad portfolio of LEED green building products and services, its own tradeshow, the Greenbuild International Conference and Expo, and a network of over 70 local chapters, affiliates, and organizing groups.

Clocking in at $12 billion, the green building industry is also a far cry from its negligible monetary value a decade ago.

"This achievement is a significant milestone in the growth and development of the green building movement because it demonstrates a broad conviction that our built environment can improve the health of our planet, our economy, and our communities," says Rick Fedrizzi, president, CEO and founding chair of the organization. "At all levels, our members--their vision for a sustainable built environment, their knowledge of building science and practice, and their commitment to results--are why the green building movement has grown exponentially in the last decade and a half."
