Celebrating a decade of promoting design excellence across a variety of disciplines, the Smithsonian's Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum has announced the winners and finalists in its 10th annual National Design Awards.

Among the honorees are a slew of industry heavyweights, including Interior Design Hall of Fame members Tsao & McKown Architects for interiors, SHoP Architects for architecture, Hood Design for landscapes, and the New York Times graphics department for communications.

Other champs who will be feted during the October 22 awards gala at New York’s Cipriani include lifetime achievement designee Bill Moggridge, the IDEO founder who designed the first laptop computer, and fashion winner Francisco Costa, women’s creative director of Calvin Klein Collection.

Boym Partners, the New York-based studio headed by Constantin and Laurene Boym, claims product design honors, while the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis is named for corporate achievement. This year’s Design Mind prize goes to physicist and energy expert Amory Lovins, the co-founder of entrepreneurial think-tank Rocky Mountain Institute.

A jury composed entirely of previous NDA winners judged the 2009 awards, including Rhode Island School of Design president John Maeda, Herman Miller vice president and creative director Stephen Frykholm, and Maharam principal Michael Maharam.

The Manhattan museum also announced the fall arrival of "Design USA: Contemporary Innovation," a new exhibition celebrating the accomplishments of the past decade’s roster of NDA winners—from Tupperware to Tom Ford. The show opens October 16 to coincide with the fourth annual National Design Week (October 18 to 24) and will continue through April 4.
