Call for Entries: Dyson Design Competition

Entries should reflect James Dyson's philosophy of "complete design."

Nicholas Tamarin -- Interior Design, 1/17/2008 12:00:00 AM

The James Dyson Foundation's fourth annual Eye for Why student design competition is now open to submissions. Organizers are seeking functional products that solve "everyday problems."

The competition, initiated by vacuum magnate James Dyson, is open to all student members of the Industrial Designers Society of America as well as students in any National Association of Schools of Art and Design-accredited degree programs. The submission deadline for entries is February 9.

The winner of the first place prize will receive $5,000 with an additional $2,000 going to the winner's student advisor. Two second prize winners will receive $2,000 each and three third prize winners will take home $1,000 each.

Entries are not restricted by theme or product group, according to admission criteria, but should reflect James Dyson's philosophy of "complete design," a concept that focuses on a product that solves a problem, works well, and provides a real advantage over existing offerings.

A new feature for the submission process, the Think of the Eye entry portal, will allow applicants to create profiles, upload designs to share, or limit access to those in their networks. Entrants can also post videos, blog about their competition experience, and connect with other design students to share ideas and network.
