In June, a new 100,000-square-foot museum will open its doors on the banks of the river Amstel in Amsterdam. The Hermitage Amsterdam will be located in the Amstelhof building, a historic riverfront building renovated by Hans van Heeswijk Architects.
The Amstelhof building, formally a home for the elderly, was built in 1683 and gifted to the municipality of Amsterdam in 1999 by the Social Welfare organization of the Dutch Reformed.
Carrying a 40 million euro price tag (about $51.5 million), the museum will include transparent glass lifts and stairs, two large exhibition halls, an old church hall, trustees' rooms, and an inner courtyard. The main entrance, including a jetty, will be located on the river.
A branch of the Russian Hermitage state museum in St. Petersburg, Russia, the Hermitage Amsterdam will present two temporary exhibitions a year from the collections of the Hermitage in St. Petersburg and other Russian museums.
