JAMES TUFENKIAN , a fourth-generation rug man who embraced his roots only after receiving a law degree from New York University, has reintroduced the art of hand-crafted rug making to Armenia, training and employing more than 1,000 artisans. His Tufenkian Foundation supports a wide range of projects, including re-populating abandoned towns and funding an orphanage and senior citizen center. Tufenkian's new Armenian carpet collection is called Tabriz. It includes the Mahabad design shown here in Ruby; Herat, a larger medallion pattern displayed in both the border and field in Olive; and the solid Jozan in Glacier and Walnut. Tufenkian, 902 Broadway, New York, NY 10010. www.tufenkiancarpets.com.
