Don't expect a ribbon-cutting late next year when UNStudio unveils 5 Franklin Place, unless someone has an oxyacetylene torch handy. That's because the apartment tower's most conspicuous architectural feature will be its façade, wrapped in sinuous aluminum strips that resemble ribbons.

The 20-story New York building, developed by Sleepy Hudson, is the first U.S. project for this Dutch firm and its cofounder, Ben van Berkel. Interiors are being designed in collaboration with B&B Italia's contract division, led by general manager Emanuele Busnelli.
