  1. Get a key to the Windy City's design and architecture during the Great Chicago Places and Spacesfestival. More than 200 free tours of downtown landmarks include a stroll through Millennium Park, where Anish Kapoor's 110-ton stainless-steel Cloud Gate resides.   2. "Fabulous! Fashions of the 1940's,"at the Museum at FIT in New York, flaunts vintage American style. Among the more than 30 fashions and accessories are a rayon-crepe wrap dress, donated by the New York Dress Institute, and designer Norman Norell's au courant one-shoulder gown in silk crepe.   3. Banks Violette is no stranger to New York's Whitney Museum of American Art—he was part of the 2004 Biennial. He returns to the museum with "Banks Violette: Untitled," his first solo exhibition. The multimedia installation, with music by Snorre Ruch, is being represented by his oil on canvas elyse marie pahler, 7.22.95. May 27–October 2; 800-944-8639; whitney.org.

  4. The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum in Ridgefield, Connecticut, is in knots over Orly Genger. Using her fingers in lieu of knitting needles, Genger wove climbing rope into 30-by-50-foot Mr. Softie, which blankets the museum's entrance floor. May 1–October 10; 203-438-4519; aldrichart.org.

  5. With "Dual Vision, The Simona and Jerome Chazen Collection," some 100 modern works fill all three floors of the New York's Museum of Arts &Design.
