Circle of Light

The Bolo lamp by Modiss Illuminación is far from square. Designed to rest directly on a table surface, the smooth sphere of handblown glass surrounds a chrome-tipped halogen light source. Three wavy rods of handblown glass hang in horizontal tiers to form the Astral chandelier. Iris Design Studio

Named for one of the world's last advancing glaciers, an Argentine wonder, the Perito Moreno by Iris Kadouri features one, two, or three bulbs that appear to be partially submerged in a bed of mirror. Spark Lighting International

A tumble of white cast-ceramic shapes, attached to rubber-coated cord, composes this young architect's pendant fixture. If the daisy went space-age, it might look something like the Atomium. Willowlamp

The old ball-and-chain sways to a new beat in the hands of two South Africans, Adam Hoets and Sian Eliot. Their 25-piece series of lamps employs standard ball chain, suspended from frames to create fanciful volumes. This version, which takes G9 25-watt halogen lamps, can be made in custom sizes. An Adolf Loos chandelier from 1911 has just been reissued by this company. And nothing could be simpler. Jonathan Browning

The Richelieu chandelier obeys the cardinal rules of design. A simple ring of cast bronze supports 12 finials that partially conceal opal-glass diffusers encasing 20-watt halogen lamps. To create the intricate Montone, Ben Quaedvlieg wound ribbons of brushed or stainless steel into an oval vortex, which surrounds six bulbs encased in opaline glass. Even if wings aren't your thing, Icarus is a flight of fancy. The latest of Tord Boontje's delicate laser-cut marvels, the pendant fixture's asymmetrical sweep of polyester feathers shields a 60-watt incandescent bulb. The fixture measures approximately 17 by 31 inches, with a 15-foot-long drop cord. This little gem of a table lamp is from the Jewels collection. Pave's transparent wineglass shape contains a diffuser detailed with orange, blue, clear, and acid-green Swarovski crystals.
