On October 20, the new Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art will make its debut in Overland Park, Kansas. Designed by architecture firm Kyu Sung Woo Architects, headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the museum will be located on the Johnson County Community College campus.
Offering 11,000 square feet of exhibition space, the Nerman Museum will be the largest contemporary art museum in a four-state region and the only contemporary art museum in Kansas. Contemporary artists to be showcased include Dana Schutz, Kehinde Wiley, Uta Barth, Kerry James Marshall, and Do-Ho Suh.
Billed as a contemporary, minimalist structure, the museum is clad in limestone and glass. Highlights include a 1.5 acre front lawn, an exterior LED installation by artist Leo Villareal, and a glass-enclosed lobby. The interior features a double-height atrium wrapped with perforated metal.
"This community college has an exceptional collection of outdoor sculpture and other contemporary art located throughout its campus that creates a daily experience of art for its students," says Kyu Sung Woo, principal of his namesake firm. "This inspired the direction for the building as we began to think of the museum not as a repository for art, but as the start of a longer journey of art on campus."
Gould Evans Associates served as the architect of record.
