The Skidmore, Owings & Merrill Foundation has awarded its 2003 Interior Architecture Traveling Fellowship to Kyle Reynolds, a graduate of the School of Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee. The $7,500 grant assists young architects, engineers, and urban planners in continuing their education through firsthand observation of foreign cultures, history, and design. Reynolds, who holds a degree in architecture and also studied urban planning and structural engineering, has chosen to go to Japan to observe how cultural variables and limited space affect the country's interior architecture. As he explains it, "I'm interested in how this culture's acceptance of confinement allows them the freedom to explore radical ideas that integrate technology into interior architecture and, in turn, provide dynamic, flexible, and livable spaces."
