Southern California modernists will bow to the past next month as the Los Angeles chapter of the American Institute of Architects embarks upon the first edition of its annual Spring Home Tour to focus specifically on traditional homes.
Set for April 19 from 11am to 4pm, the self-guided outing will direct structure-seers to the restorations and renovations of classic Los Angeles architecture in the city's Hancock Park neighborhood. Running the gamut from French-Mediterranean to Italianate, the tour includes properties such as June Street House, a circa-1915, Moorish-influenced home that was recently renovated by Rogerio Carvalheiro.
Other stopovers include the turn-of-the century Italianate Plymouth Residence, renovated by Jamie Gluck and John Wentworth; the 1926 Mediterranean Revival S. McCadden House, restored by Newman & Wolen Design; and the 1920's French-Mediterranean Renaissance N. McCadden Residence, renovated by William Hefner Architecture, Interiors & Landscape.
"Los Angeles is a city rich with architectural history," says Carlo Caccavale, associate director of AIA Los Angeles. "We thought it was important to recognize this part of our heritage, and highlight some of the outstanding projects that are yielded from blending modern updates with diverse historical elements and styles."
As for dyed-in-the-wool progressives, cool your heels: Your day in the convertible comes May 3, as AIA Los Angeles hosts a contemporary-focused version of its Spring Home Tour in Santa Monica and Venice.
