Carpet manufacturer Shaw has the first carpet products to be certified by third-party consultancy McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry. Shaw EcoWorx tile, EcoWorx Performance Broadloom, and Eco Solution Q premium branded nylon have picked up MBDC Silver certifications. All three products can be applied towards LEED Innovation in Design credits from the U.S. Green Building Council.
Cradle to Cradle certification insures building and interior products are composed of materials safe to human health and the environment and can be recycled or composted at the end of a lifecycle. Firms must also have a company-wide commitment to social responsibility. Shaw has pioneered innovative systems to collect and return materials used in EcoWorx tile, EcoWorx Performance Broadloom and Eco Solution Q to the manufacturing process after use.
MBDC was founded by architect William McDonough and chemist Dr. Michael Braungart.
“Shaw is setting new standards for sustainability by designing its products as technical nutrients that can be recirculated in the manufacturing cycle of renewal,” says McDonough. “This helps expand the environmental focus to what's being used, reused or recycled and not just on the amount of recycled content.”
