Copper-Hewitt National Design Award Winners Announced

An awards gala will be held October 18.

Photo byTimothy Hursley.The Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum has revealed the results of its 2007 National Design Awards, honoring design excellence in disciplines including architecture, communications, fashion, interior, landscape, and product design. For the eighth annual awards program, winners are honored in eleven categories.

On October 18, winners will be feted at the Cooper-Hewitt with a gala dinner including Honorary Patron Laura Bush.

Lifetime Achievement- Antoine Predock, principal of Antoine Predock Architect.

Corporate Achievement- software company Adobe Systems.

Design Mind- Denise Scott Brown and Robert Venturi, principals of design firm Venturi Scott Brown and Associates.

Special Jury Commendation– Frank Ching, author of several books on architecture and professor emeritus at the University of Washington.

Architecture Design– Office dA, a Boston-based architecture and design firm.

Finalists are Enrique Norten, a principal of the New York- and Mexico-based architecture firm TEN Arquitectos, Miller professor of architecture at the University of Pennsylvania and Eero Saarinen visiting professor of architectural design at the Yale School of Architecture; and Dan Rockhill, principal of the Kansas-based Rockhilll + Associates and director of Studio 804, a graduate design studio at the University of Kansas.

Communications Design- graphic designer Chip Kidd.

Finalists are C&G Partners, a firm that focuses on work for media, the arts and public spaces;
and Paula Scher, principal in the New York office of international design consultancy Pentagram.

Fashion Design- designer Rick Owens.

Finalists are designers Phillip Lim and Narciso Rodriguez.

Interior Design- Lewis.tsurumaki.lewis, an architecture and design partnership that explores the intersection between theory and practice.

Finalists are David Rockwell, founder of architecture and design firm Rockwell Group; and architecture firm Tsao & McKown Architects.

Landscape Design Award- landscape architecture firm Peter Walker and Partners.
 
Finalists are Field Operations, a New York-based landscape and urban design practice; and Ken Smith, known for parks and public spaces.

Product Design- Jonathan Ive, senior vice president of industrial design at Apple.

Finalists are New York-based designer Karim Rashid and design firm Smart Design.

Design Patron- textile company Maharam.
