Leibrock, Latta and McCurry win ASID awards

Staff -- Interior Design, 5/17/2002 9:10:00 AM

Cynthia Leibrock, Hugh Latta and Margaret McCurry have been given two prestigious awards by the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID).

For her lifetime of work dedicated to improving the lives of older and disabled people through design, Leibrock was bestowed with the Design for Humanity Award while Latta and McCurry were awarded the Designer of Distinction Award.

It was the first time in the history of the Designer of Distinction Award that two designers were recognized in the same year.

The Design for Humanity Award is presented to an individual or institution that has significantly contributed to improving the environment for humanity through design-related activities. The impact of these activites must demonstrate far-reaching effects.

'Leibrock's contributions to the field of interior design through her work in universal design has been profound,' said Barbara Nugent, ASID president. 'We are pleased to recognize the lasting effects, scope and quality of her work by presenting her with one of our highest honors.'

Leibrock is the principal and co-founder of Fort Collins, CO-based Easy Access to Health. The firm offers consulting services in patient-centered design, planning for independent living, product analysis and judiciary witness services.

Jean Sebben, president-elect of the ASID Colorado Chapter, said Leibrock 'has made the issues of barrier-free design a way of life, not an exception. The research statistics that Cynthia's lifetime of activities have provided our design profession is profound. Cynthia's dedication to promoting the advancement of a nondiscriminatory society for the handicapped with education, knowledge and dignity has been continuous.'

The Designer of Distinction Award recognizes ASID professional interior designers who have made outstanding contributions toward achieving design excellence. The award is based on the winner's professional achievements as exemplified by their body of work. In addition, the winner, or in this case winners, must demonstrate creative and innovative concepts that have advanced the profession of interior design.

'The work of Hugh Latta and Margaret McCurry is of such quality that they both merit the honor,' said Nugent. 'The significant impact of their work on others' lives is remarkable. ASID is pleased to recognize the efforts of these two stellar designers by presenting them with one of our most prestigious awards.'

Latta is chair of the board of Design Contonuum, Inc., an Atlanta-based firm specializing in hopsitality design.

McCurry is a principal at Tigerman McCurry Architects in Chicago. Her large body of work encompasses the design and remodel of country and town clubs, showrooms, museum installations, offices and residences.

'Hugh has made outstanding contributions toward achieving design excellence in the hospitality field,' said Rita Carson Guest of Carson Guest. 'He is highly respected... as a talented designer who also takes time to speak, support design education and promote our profession while running a highly successful, world-renowned design business.'

Said Gary Wheeler, principal of Perkins & Will of McCurry, 'Margeret brings her love of interior design and architecture to all her projects, infusing them with the best of both professions.'
