Gilbert Adrian, the costume designer best known by his last name alone, revolutionized American women's fashion by showing moviegoers what glamour looked like. Katharine Hepburn, Joan Crawford, and Greta Garbo wore his bias-cut silk gowns and strong-shouldered suits, and he also designed opulent ensembles for Camille, The Wizard of Oz, and more. "Adrian: American Glamour"—at the Costume Institute at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art—shines the spotlight on over 100 costumes and hats designed by Adrian between 1942 and 1952 and, in so doing, explores the mystique of Hollywood's golden age.
