CENTRAL PARK RESIDENCE, NEW YORK

Shelton, Mindel and Associates

As problems go, having to gut two prewar apartments overlooking Manhattan's Central Park and transform them into a coherent single residence is the sort most people would consider themselves lucky to face. Luckier still to have coprincipals Peter Shelton and Lee Mindel reconfigure the old school warren of rooms into a seamless living space. Now, a 60-foot-long entrance gallery easily leads guests to common areas while simultaneously separating formal and casual spaces. Pale elements including white-painted plaster built-ins, white-oak flooring, and fluorescent-lit coves keep the tone crisply contemporary while freestanding walnut components and a soapstone hearth give a sleek nod to tradition. Graphic wall finishes and playful furnishings add accessible elegance.
