According to an article today on WWD.com, Chanel has decided to cut the final three European legs of the tour for Zaha Hadid's Chanel Mobile Art Pavilion. It closed for departure in New York on November 9.
Facing the downturn economy, the art container became an unnecessary, costly marketing venture for the Parisian fashion house. A spokesperson for Chanel told WWD, "Considering the current economic crisis, we decided it was best to stop the project. We will be concentrating on strategic growth investments."

The Pavilion was the brainchild of Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld and British starchitect Zaha Hadid, and served as a PR campaign to showcase the design parallels between fashion, art, and architecture. It was launched earlier this year as a nod to the classic Chanel 2.55 handbag featuring 20 contemporary artists from around the globe. The project, of which the final cost was never disclosed, was open to the public and admission was free. The fate of the structure has yet to be determined.
