Mamma's Decorating Tips

Mamma Andersson touches down for her first U.S. solo exhibition, "Rooms Under the Influence" at the David Zwirner gallery in New York. Mixing oil and acrylic, the Swedish painter conjures up cluttered, slightly worn interiors—in the same way that a talented decorator might. "They feel like imaginary spaces with invented people, almost always women," notes one of the gallery's directors, Hanna Schouwink.
Some consider Andersson a feminist Edward Hopper from the frozen north. Schouwink calls the emotional emptiness and loneliness in the work "extremely authentic and fundamentally Scandinavian." Through June 17; 212-727-2070; davidzwirner.com.
