First Impressions

We set our searchlights at a very sharp angle in November, capturing unique perspectives on exceptional talent, both at home and abroad. The resulting stories capture a textured and enticing design landscape of retail, office, residential, and public installations by up-and-coming talents. You may not know these names yet, but we're convinced you'll be seeing a lot more of them. From Tokyo and São Paulo to Chicago and Long Island City and many locales between, the projects in our pages impeccably bridge the gap between innovation and execution, established trend and originality, fresh vision and seasoned understanding.

What brought this issue together was how newly discovered design firms managed these vital, essential qualities. What makes it a page-turner—don't miss the IIDA and Future Furniture awards reports and our new columns "Crosslines" (on sustainability) and "Matters of Design" (on design in Finland)—is the exemplary display of craft. The latter is only matched by the manifest commitment of our November designers to putting invention, as archetypal axiom, front and center.
