No Sitting On This SOFA

More than 60 international galleries will offer works in ceramics, glass, metal, and wood.

The 11th annual Sculpture Objects & Functional Art fair--otherwise known as SOFA New York--returns to New York's Park Avenue Armory, May 29-June 1. Artists ranging from George Nakashima to Dale Chihuly will figure prominently in offerings from more than 60 international galleries and 10-plus countries, including works in ceramics, glass, metal, and wood.

"More than two decades ago, I witnessed a host of artists creating work in clay and glass with an unheralded vitality that transcended function," says SOFA founder and director Mark Lyman. "Today, their work is in hundreds of museums internationally while continuing to climb the price charts at both Sotheby's and Christie's auction houses."

SOFA New York kicks off with two opening night galas at the Armory on May 28: An invite-only preview for the clients of participating galleries, and a private fundraising dinner hosted by New York's Museum of Arts & Design. An invite-only champagne breakfast will also be held prior to the opening.

Several invite-only VIP programs are running concurrently with the event, including visits to private collectors' homes and corporate collections. Curator-led tours of museums also run the length of the fair, and a lecture series featuring six presentations by artists, curators, and collectors convenes on May 29.
