Reminiscent of 1930's animation, Jon Haddock's Cartoon Violence series depicts traumatic events covered in the media. His R. Polanski and Unidentified Model, in urethane and acrylic, was inspired by the filmmaker's statutory-rape conviction. After breaking into the art scene at the Whitney Biennial in 2004, a multimedia artist gets her first solo museum show with "MOCA Focus: Lecia Dole-Recio"at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. A wizard with an X-Acto knife, she forms negative spaces by extracting layers of material adhered to a surface. The architecture and colors of Mexico City inspired this untitled piece in gouache, graphite, paper, vellum, glue, and tape. August 3–October 23; 213-626-6222; moca.org.

Named after a marina in Southern California, Big Pleasure Pointis docking in New York, courtesy of the city's Public Art Fund. Sculptor Nancy Rubins is wiring more than 60 rowboats, canoes, kayaks, Jet Skis, surfboards, and catamarans to one another and attaching them to an armature of stainless steel. The result, a 55-foot-wide, 40-foot-high cantilevering arc, is as graceful as the dancers who gather on the plaza below for Midsummer Night Swing. July 5–September 4; 212-980-4575; publicartfund.org.
