The results are in for the inaugural Live-in Room Kitchen Design Competition, presented by Interior Design and appliance manufacturer Electrolux.

The grand prize winner, Jeff Jenkins of design firm Jeff Jenkins Design + Development in Alexandria, Virginia, created a space that encourages social interaction and supports the idea that the modern kitchen is the heart of the home.

"We were impressed with Jeff’s entry because of the innovative way he interpreted the concept of the Live-In Room, incorporating the outdoors into the kitchen, and because of the quality of his presentation," says Henrik Otto, Electrolux senior vice president of global design and a member of the jury.

Jenkins received a $50,000 cash prize plus a suite of Electrolux Icon appliances, valued at $25,000. His winning kitchen rendering will be brought to life in the Electrolux booth at April 10-13 in Chicago, and featured in Interior Design’s July 2008 issue.

Second place went to April Lewis, a student at the University of North Carolina- Greensboro. Lewis won Electrolux Icon appliances valued at $25,000 for her design. Third prize winner, Ghislaine Viňas, received $10,000 in Electrolux Icon appliances.

In addition to Otto, the jury was composed of Interior Design editor-in-chief Cindy Allen; architect Mark Zeff; designer Jonathan Adler; and Geoffrey Zakarian, the chef behind restaurants Town and Country in New York. Entrants were critiqued on their application of the live-in room concept and innovative integration of appliances, as well as creativity and aesthetics.
