From ghost tales to outrageous comedies, Japanese drama comes to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in the first major U.S. exhibition on the subject. "Miracles and Mischief: No and Kyogen Theater in Japan" covers 600 years, from the 14th to the 20th centuries. The supernatural and spiritual themes of No theater and the comedic encounters of the Kyogen tradition are represented by the objects associated with the dramatic productions, including elaborately woven costumes, masks, folding screen paintings, textile-making tools, and props. The only North American venue for this exhibition, LACMA will also include selections from its own impressive collection of No objects alongside works on loan from major international institutions and Japanese shrines. November 10–February 2; 323-857-6000; lacma.org.
