Zumtobel Group Launches Sustainable Award

Nominees and laureates will be revealed at the end of the month.

Mairi Beautyman -- Interior Design, 6/13/2007 12:00:00 AM

Austrian lighting manufacturer Zumtobel Group has announced a corporate-wide plan to excel its commitment to energy efficiency and human well-being. The first step is a new biannual international awards program for the built environment, the Zumtobel Group Award for Sustainability and Humanity.

The program consists of two categories. “Built Environment,” carrying an 80,000 euro prize, will recognize an outstanding architectural, engineering, or urban design project realized within the last two years. Projects must fulfill current demands for sustainable living, the manufacturer says, and take into account the needs of the future. The “Research and Initiative” category includes a 60,000 euro prize and will honor an innovative current research project or social initiative in architecture and the built environment. Projects must be developed and run by NGOs (Non-Governmental Organizations), universities, independent groups, or individuals.

An international jury of interdisciplinary experts is currently selecting nominees and laureates, to be revealed June 28. Winners will be announced during an awards ceremony on September 14 at Kunsthaus Bregenz in Austria.

“We all realise that natural resources are limited. Networking as we do with leading architects, engineers, and lighting designers, we also know that visionary solutions in architecture and urban planning can help reduce global energy consumption and at the same time improve the general quality of life,” says Zumtobel Group CEO Andreas Ludwig.

The awards program is curated and organized by Aedes Architecture Forum, based in Berlin.
