Sweet and Lowdown

Mark McMenamin -- Interior Design, 9/1/2007 12:00:00 AM

Hipster status is coming at a hefty price in Brooklyn, New York. Developers plotting high-rises and superstores on its industrial waterfront have landed the borough on the National Trust for Historic Preservation's annual list of 11 Most Endangered Historic Places. The Municipal Art Society of New York has also launched a campaign, Save Industrial Brooklyn, to designate the Brooklyn Army Terminal, the Red Hook Graving Dock, DUMBO's industrial area, and the Greenpoint and Williamsburg neighborhoods for protection.

However, only New York's Landmarks Preservation Commission can assign landmark status. Currently calendared for consideration are DUMBO as a whole, Greenpoint's Eberhard Pencil Factory complex, and three Domino Sugar refinery buildings in Williamsburg.
