Steven Holl Architects has another major project underway in China: After an international competition, the architecture firm was selected to design the master plan for an office tower complex around the new Shenzhen Stock Exchange Headquarters in Shenzhen, China. The Shenzhen Planning Bureau intends to use the complex--including four towers and located in Shenzhen’s Futian commercial business district--to add urban unity to the area.
The towers will serve Media Group, China Construction Bank, China Insurance Group, and Southern & Bosera Funds, respectively, and will be designed by architecture firms Morphosis, Coop Himmelb(l)au, Atelier FCJZ, Hans Hollein, and MVRDV, also selected as winners in the contest.
With a master plan focusing on merging the four towers into one unified element linking both street and pedestrian traffic, Steven Holl Architects created what they coined a "Social Bracket," housing supporting programs for the towers, such as cafeterias, gyms, and cultural organizations. The Social Bracket is topped with a green roof--complete with ponds and plantings--maintained via storm water collection and greywater recycling. As for the towers, each will be clad with automatic solar tracking screens. Made of perforated PV cells, the screens will be used to harvest enough solar energy to run the entire cooling system. The towers will also prevent solar heat gain.
