Best of Year Winner, Education: Clive Wilkinson Architects: FIDM San Diego Campus, San Diego, CA
See more on this project >

With a dozen-plus projects for the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising under his belt, Interior Design Hall of Fame member Clive Wilkinson was more than ready to take on the spec office building that would become a San Diego "campus" for this California institution. His characteristic élan accessorizes, if you will, an eminently pragmatic plan profiting from daylight and fostering interaction. Riffing on an Elizabethan collar, he gave the student lounge's ceiling ruffles of its own—in galvanized steel. He used the same metal to build the student store, then enlivened its glass front with tangerine-orange vinyl. The main computer lounge is gleaming red, from the gloss paint on the walls and ceiling to the foam-block benches. Wilkinson got literary, too. On one of the pervasive glass walls, he used more vinyl to apply the motto of FIDM's president and CEO: "Freedom to succeed."
