M2L wants to knockout knockoffs, but it also wants to help out a few bright design students. So, the New York-based furniture importer and distributor tackles both noble causes at once by sponsoring the new Genuine Design Scholarship.
Designed to educate students about the impact that illegal design infringement has on the design industry, the scholarship is eligible to students of New York Eleven, an affiliation of New York State educational institutions offering four-year programs in interior design.
On Thursday, September 18, M2L kicks off the competition with a panel discussion on knockoffs and intellectual property in its New York showroom, located at 215 East 58th Street, from 6:00 to 7:30 pm. Moderated by design journalist Fred Bernstein, the panel includes interior designer Benjamin Noriega-Ortiz, industrial designers Carlos Salgado and Jeff Miller, and M2L president Michael Manes.
Participating students will view a playback of the seminar online or on DVD, and write an essay on one of three possible questions regarding design authenticity. The finalist's essays, due by December 15, will be reviewed by a jury that includes Interior Design articles editor Annie Block. Four winners will be selected to receive scholarships of $1000, $1500, $2500, and $3500.
We would love your feedback!
