It's Graduation Time

Having grown from a few hundred works, housed in the art department, to a collection of 17,000, requiring two separate buildings, the University of Texas at Austin's museum has officially come of age. The Blanton Museum of Art's old-master drawings and contemporary pieces will soon occupy a complex by Kallmann McKinnell & Wood Architects.
Opening in April, the 124,000-square-foot Mari and James A. Michener Gallery will hold the permanent collection and host temporary exhibitions. A 56,000-square-foot companion pavilion, slated to open a year later, will contain a café, a shop, an auditorium, classrooms, and offices. Both buildings employ a palette of limestone, Texas granite, teak, glass, and Venetian plaster—with colonial-revival exteriors to complement nearby structures on the UT campus.
