Cradle to Cradle Draft Available for Comment

MBDC will launch a new level, called Basic.

Mairi Beautyman -- Interior Design, 8/9/2007 12:00:00 AM

Through August 31, sustainable design consultancy McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry (MBDC) is asking for feedback on its second generation of Cradle to Cradle Certification criteria. Feedback can be made online, via email at certification@mbdc.com, or via phone at 434-295-1111 through August 31.

Based on information gathered during the first two years of the program, the revisions call for enhanced achievement at the Silver level. A new level, called Basic, will come with the second generation, bringing the certification to four levels: Basic, Silver, Gold, and Platinum.

To earn Cradle to Cradle certification, manufacturers must: Manufacture products with materials that are safe for human health and the environment and that can be recycled or composted in perpetuity; utilize systems to collect and recover the value of materials following their use; maximize the use of renewable energy; manage water use to maximize quality, promote healthy ecosystems and respect local impacts; and guide operations and stakeholder relationships using social responsibility.

"We have gained valuable insight from implementing our certification system across multiple industries, but we also want to hear what others think about the program," says Ken Alston MBDC CEO. "We look forward to receiving input on our draft criteria from product developers and the general public, and releasing a more robust set of criteria as a result."

The final version of the criteria is slated for September 2007.
