Crown Jewels

Mark McMenamin -- Interior Design, 7/1/2007 12:00:00 AM

And the Lubetkin Prize goes to. . .Southern Cross Station in Melbourne, Australia, by Grimshaw Architects with Daryl Jackson Architects. Honoring the memory of architect Berthold Lubetkin, the prize goes to a recipient of the RIBA International Awards, presented annually by the Royal Institute of British Architects in recognition of non-U.K. achievements.

Besides the station, Australia was home to two winners, the L5 Building at Sydney's University of New South Wales by Bligh Voller Nield and Perth's Edith Cowan University by JCY Architects. Steven Holl Architects also pulled in two—for the School of Art and Art History at the University of Iowa in Iowa City and the Swiss Embassy residence in Washington, D.C., the latter with Rüssli Architekten. The British Embassy in Sana'a, Yemen, by Design Engine Architects, David Chipperfield Architects's Des Moines Public Library, and New York's Hearst Tower by Foster + Partners also won awards.
