The Modernist Mode

Karen D. Singh, Craig Kellogg, and Mark McMenamin -- Interior Design, 1/1/2009 12:00:00 AM

Amid the proliferation of arabesques currently swirling through the design community, where is a modern formalist to go? The regimented grids of Lubna Chowdhary's glazed ceramic tiles provide a safe haven. Lunar, with its bifurcated floating orbs, is offered at 2 and 4 inches square. The blue-green, red-orange, multicolored, or neutral patterns of Trust erupt through layers of opaque and translucent glazes, like a celestial event interpreted by Vincent van Gogh and sized to 4-inch squares. Chowdhary divides squares of 2 or 4 inches into two solid stripes for Hope—designed to be installed horizontally and vertically, alone or combined. Also intended for endless combinations, Reverie's slim 6-inch-long bands of color are sold by the yard. 44-20-8769-1142; lubnachowdhary.co.uk. circle 435
