CHALLENGED BY THE NEED for engaging fabrics to entertain, educate, and energize young patients, textile designer Louise Russell created Shadow Play for Carnegie. The fabric's main attraction, the concept of light, was first introduced last year in Russell's Philosophy fabric collection (February Market, 2000). Shadow Play builds on the aspects of light and transforms the fabric into an interactive experience for children. The design, inspired by the story-telling connected with shadow puppets, includes animals that replicate cast shadows created by various hand positions. To further the idea, Carnegie will provide a how-to book to health care facilities. Fun With Hand Shadows by Frank Jacobs and Henry Bursill includes poems and specific illustrations depicting ways to create the images. The company will also provide mini flashlights that clip on to the patient's clothing. Carnegie, 110 North Centre Avenue, Rockville Centre, NY 11570.
