Woodwork Institute Bestows Excellence Awards

This year, 13 awards were handed out—a record high.

From a swanky yacht to a cathedral, entries poured in for the 2005-2006 Bernard B. Barber Jr. Award for Excellence and Ralph B. McClure Craftsmanship Awards, awarded by the Woodwork Institute. An architectural millwork organization, the Woodwork Institute serves Oregon, California, Nevada, and Arizona. Thirteen winners were selected as part of the awards program, which honors designers and fabricators.

Three projects earned the Bernard B. Barber award, which recognizes design professionals for excellence in certified specifications: New York-based Beyer, Blinder, & Belle for the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament located in Sacramento, California; Fentress Bradburn and Associates of Denver, Colorado for their work on the Sacramento City Hall; and Russell & Davis Architects for work on Tamalpais Bank in Corte Madera, California.

The Ralph B. McClure Award is bestowed to fabricators. Recognizing outstanding craftsmanship, this year’s award went to Quality Cabinet & Fixture Company for the 180-foot Mia Elise luxury yacht. Mia Elise can hold up to 26 people—or 12 guests and 14 crew members.

A total of nine firms received Honorable Mentions for the McClure Award: Burnett & Son; North Coast Cabinetry; Mid Canada Millwork; Charles Marpet Fine Woodworking; ISEC; and K&Z Cabinet Company.

The Institute is currently accepting applications for its 2006-2007 competition. More information is available online.
