International carpet manufacturer Milliken Contract is bent on staying carbon negative. To achieve this green goal, the firm maintains Trees for All, an online planting initiative. Through this campaign, visitors to the Milliken Contract Showroom at the 2006 NeoCon World’s Trade Fair in Chicago registered more than 1700 additional trees to southeastern forests.
As part of the initiative, the LaGrange, Georgia-based firm manages more than 138,000 acres of corporate forests, generates power from small hydroelectric plants, and harvests methane from the local landfill as an alternative energy source. Courtesy of the latter, Milliken uses 30 percent less natural gas during manufacturing—which is approximately the annual electricity used by 1500 homes.
“The benefits start with planting a single tree and multiply—each acre of forest sequesters about 2.5 tons of carbon annually,” says Bill Gregory, Milliken’s director of sustainable strategies. “Planting just 30 trees will absorb the carbon dioxide generated in the production of energy for the average American lifestyle each year.”
Milliken has maintained zero waste to landfill from carpet manufacturing since 1999.
