Milliken Launches Statewide Energy Conservation Program

To support the cause, Georgia Power is donating Compact Fluorescent Light bulbs.

Mairi Beautyman -- Interior Design, 8/27/2007 12:00:00 AM

Milliken Floor Covering continues to grow more sustainable--while increasing production. Since 1995, the carpet manufacturer has reduced water and energy consumption 50 percent per pound of product. Last Friday, on Respect Our Earth Day, the company announced an Energy Conservation Initiative to press its environmental goals even further.

Tackling four key areas--people, alternative sources, innovation and green building--the initiative will concentrate on energy consumption, emissions, and water use throughout Milliken, and beyond. Thanks to a donation of Compact Fluorescent Light bulbs (CFLs) by Georgia Power, Milliken associates are making the first steps towards the Energy Star Pledge. Each Milliken employee will also receive a CFL.

With the pledge and a comprehensive energy audit, Milliken expects to achieve reduced energy consumption, higher efficiencies, and a cleaner and greener operation.

"Respect Our Earth is a philosophy championed by our Chairman Roger Milliken for more than 65 years," says Russell Grizzle, president, global floor covering division of Milliken & Company. "Today, we challenge ourselves, our associates and our communities to make a difference by lowering energy consumption."

From 1984 to 2004, energy consumption in Georgia grew 76 percent and individual Georgians used 16 percent more energy per person.
