Lee Mindel’s Open House
Take a personal tour of the Interior Design Hall of Fame member’s Southampton compound.

Most designers of merit have a personal connection to their work, but when Lee Mindel accepted Interior Design’s Best of Year Award in the freestanding residence project category last month—along with fellow Interior Design Hall of Fame member Peter Shelton, his partner in Shelton, Mindel & Associates—he had a good excuse for feeling personally validated. After all, the honored Southampton compound, which the pair designed in collaboration with Reed Morrison, is where the New York-based designer hangs his hat.
Located on a 2-acre property overlooking the Peconic Bay, the 6,500-square-foot concrete home and its two-story, white clapboard-clad pool house are connected by a boardwalk-like spline. Free-floating plaster ceilings in the public areas of the house hang above vintage appointments from the likes of Le Corbusier and Alvar Aalto. In the back of the pool house, oak-framed glass overlooks a lap pool and sculpture garden, while the upstairs bedroom is surrounded in maple. Along with other Best of Year winners, the home is featured in the December print edition of Interior Design.
Since it was just completed earlier this year, the compound is obviously not on the market. Still, Mindel has consented to hold a virtual open house for the benefit of interiodesign.net visitors. To begin the tour, and read Mindel’s narration, click to launch the slide show above.
Great to see the project on your site, but the photos
are out of sequence, making the "walk through" very
confusing. I'd be glad to put them in order for you.
