Innovation — more specifically, what's on the cutting edge in architecture and design theory — is the subject of a series of free lectures sponsored by the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc) in Los Angeles. Beginning September 26 and continuing through November 28, the nine talks will draw together architects from around the world to showcase emerging trends that are influencing design, ranging from digital media to urbanism.
Guest lecturers include Mario Carpo, professor, Ecole d'Architecture de Paris-La Villette, Paris; Qingyun Ma, the new dean of the University of Southern California's School of Architecture and principal of Mada S.P.A.M. in Shanghai; Bill Mitchell, professor of architecture and media arts and sciences at MIT and director of the MIT Design Laboratory and MIT Media Laboratory's Smart Cities research group; and Wolf Prix, principal of COOP HIMMELB(L)AU in Vienna and Los Angeles.
Mario Carpo, whose research focuses on the relationship between architectural theory, cultural history, and the history of media and information technology, will offer a talk titled Digital, Drifting, and the End of History, on September 26.
Bill Mitchell, who develops new strategies for architectural design and production, digital media, and cities, will discuss, Smart Cities: The City Car and other Recent Work, on November 7.
The topic of Qingyun Ma's lecture, to be held October 17, is Curatorial Urbanism, while Wolf Prix's talk, Not Enough is Too Much, is slated for October 31.
All talks begin at 7 p.m. and are open to the general public. Lectures can also be streamed live on SCI-Arc's website at www.sciarc.edu/live. For more information on location and other details, visit www.sciarc.edu/lectures.php.
