Parsons Announces MFA in Interior Design

Parsons was the first university to offer an interior design course of study dating back to 1906.

In 1906, Parsons The New School for Design launched the country’s first interior design degree program. Following the program’s inception, the school has offered undergraduate degrees in the area of study, but as the industry continues to evolve, so does the need for continuing education. Parsons recently announced it will establish the program’s first graduate course of study, offering a Master of Fine Arts in Interior Design, scheduled to welcome its first class in the fall of 2009.

The two-year, full-time program has a studio-centered, research-oriented focus, and will center on the 21st-century demands of a modern design economy by incorporating history, theory, design, material experimentation and sustainable practice into the classroom.

"Parsons’ MFA in Interior Design was developed to advance the profession," said Lois Weinthal, the director of interior design at Parsons. "Today, designers need to know how to incorporate sustainable design and enhanced building performance into their work; to stay abreast of new developments in technology and materials; and have a strong understanding of the new types of clients and users that result from social change and shifts in demographics.”

The program will be housed in Parsons' School for Constructed Environments and is currently awaiting accreditation by the Council of Interior Design andNew Yorkstate approvals for licensure.
